Lukaku 'handed in transfer request'

Romelu Lukaku made a transfer request at Chelsea before being granted a temporary move to Everton, it has emerged.

It is understood the 20-year-old Belgium striker asked to move following the August 30 European Super Cup defeat to Bayern Munich in Prague, when he missed the decisive penalty in a shootout defeat for Jose Mourinho's men.

Lukaku did not believe he could compete for a regular starting place for the lone striker's role after the arrival of Samuel Eto'o to join Fernando Torres and Demba Ba.

His request was immediately rejected and a loan with Everton negotiated on September 2, transfer deadline day, with his season-long switch ending the prospect of Ba leaving Stamford Bridge on loan.

Lukaku joined Chelsea from Anderlecht in August 2011 for a reported fee of £20million and spent last season on loan at West Brom, scoring 17 goals.

At Everton, he has scored seven goals in seven Barclays Premier League starts.

Mourinho has repeatedly been asked about Lukaku's situation since allowing the Belgian to move and was again ahead of Sunday's match with Southampton.

Mourinho said: "Romelu likes to speak. The only thing that he didn't say is why he went to Everton on loan.

"When some day he scored and he was saying 'I hope Jose is watching this'. It was like saying 'why did he let me go?' and that's what I'm telling you now. Tell the country why you left. Ask him.

"When you keep quiet all the time, you keep quiet all the time. When you like to speak, when you enjoy to speak, speak everything. Don't speak only half of it. Speak everything.

"And it's a simple question: why did you leave Chelsea? Ask him."

Mourinho believes there are a number of positives to Lukaku playing at Everton.

Mourinho added: "It's good for his evolution. It's good for Chelsea, because he belongs to us for a long time and I'm happy with that.

"I'm happy that he's scoring goals against our direct rivals and he doesn't score against us because he can't.

"It's phenomenal when you have a player even when he's not playing for you he's scoring against your opponent. That's very, very good."

Mourinho stated he is unlikely to sign players this January - "most probably we are going to end with this group," he said - as few players are available who would improve his squad and be available for the Champions League.

Chelsea have won the title once since Mourinho's departure - with Carlo Ancelotti in 2009/10 - after he delivered the club's first championship for 50 years and successive titles at the start of his first spell.

He believes winning the Premier League this season would be a greater achievement than that 2004/05 success.

Mourinho said: "To win when a club is not historically a winner is a hard step. But I think winning the title this season would be a bigger achievement.

"In my time it was just three teams fighting for the title. Now it's six. And the difference between the three and the rest was a big distance.

"And in this moment the distance between the six is short and the difference between the six and the next three, four is also short. Nobody knows what can happen.

"Maybe the difference will be a couple of points. It will be good fun I think.

"I think we have the competition that every country wants to have and nobody has."

After winning titles in Italy and in Spain during his near-six-year absence, Mourinho is enjoying his second spell in England.

Mourinho added: "I would prefer to be top of the league and the second to come 10 points after me, I would love it.

"But I love the fact that you win a match you are second, you lose a match you go from second to sixth, you lose two matches you are out of European competitions, you win two matches, you are probably first or second. The league is fantastic."

Mourinho is uncertain what it will take to win the title this season.

He added: "How many points? I don't know, but I would say maybe a team with six defeats can win."

Mourinho was asked about the pressure of the fierce competition in relation to Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas, whose job is reportedly under threat following the 6-0 loss at Manchester City.

Mourinho believes managers' positions should not be scrutinised so soon, particularly this term.

Mourinho said: "If in this league, to lose two matches is a reason to be under pressure, I think everybody during the season will be under pressure, because everybody will lose two matches.

Moyes: No plans to rest Rooney

Manchester United manager David Moyes has no plans to give Wayne Rooney a rest just yet.
wayne-rooney-manchester-united-wallpaper-2013-66
Moyes is keeping a close eye on the England international, looking for signs his standards might be slipping after a congested recent run of fixtures.

So far, the indications are all positive.

Rooney has been United's stand-out performer so far this season and claimed four assists in his side's Champions League hammering of Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

So, while Moyes accepts it will be hard to keep up such a level of performance indefinitely, there is no need to take Rooney out of the firing line.

"There will be times when we do have to try and look after him," Moyes told national newspapers.

"At the moment he doesn't need it.

"I look for any signs of a dip. If I saw them, I would probably look to do so.

"It doesn't need to be just now. A lot of other clubs are playing their players continuously.

"We can rotate but I will wait.

"If it doesn't come around and I don't need to, I won't do it."

Moyes' predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, was of the opinion that Rooney needed to keep playing matches to maintain his condition.

It is a view Moyes shares.

"He is a boy who continually gets better in the games he plays," said the Scot.

"The point I am making is that I want to keep him playing as well as he is doing.

"If he keeps doing it I don't need to worry."

Rooney's performances have ensured last season's Golden Boot winner Robin van Persie has not been missed as much as he would have been if he suffered the same groin injury troubling him now 12 months ago.

Indeed, Moyes seems to have moved the 28-year-old England striker onto a whole new level.

Rooney is even taking the responsibility of set-piece delivery. And doing rather well judging by his efforts in Germany.

"He works with (assistant manager) Steve Round on his set-pieces just about every day," said Moyes.

"He takes his time about it.

"Technically they are trying to look at how they can do it even better.

"But it is Wayne. It is his enthusiasm."

Frank Lampard aims to mark his 100th England cap with win

England midfielder Frank Lampard Frank Lampard says he is more concerned about helping England beat Ukraine in Tuesday's World Cup qualifier than winning his 100th cap for his country.

The Chelsea midfielder will become only the eighth Three Lions player to reach the milestone if he features in Kiev.

England top Group H but will be leapfrogged by Ukraine if they lose.

"The main thing is to get the result," said Lampard, 35. "I just hope to be involved. It wouldn't be enjoyable to get to 100 and not do it right."

Lampard's goals for England

England midfielder Frank Lampard
Frank Lampard has scored 29 times since being handed his England debut by Kevin Keegan against Belgium in 1999. His favourite goal? "It would be the header at Euro 2004 against France," he said. "It was my first major tournament goal. We lost the game but the fans were terrific."

Lampard made his England debut under Kevin Keegan and alongside Alan Shearer, Paul Ince and David Seaman in a 2-1 friendly win over Belgium at Sunderland's Stadium of Light in October 1999.

Since then he has gone on to score 29 times for his country and has captained them five times.

He will join a select band of centurions to have played 100 times for England if he features against Ukraine, a list that includes current international team-mates Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole.

England, who go into Tuesday's game with limited options in attack after Daniel Sturridge joined the list of players unavailable because of injury and suspension, might lead Group H but their place at next year's World Cup in Brazil is far from guaranteed.

Roy Hodgson's side are level on points with Montenegro, although with a superior goal difference, but third-placed Ukraine are only a point behind the top two.

"I never dreamt of getting anywhere near 100 caps to be honest," added Lampard. "I will be very proud, 100 is a long time [playing], but first and foremost we need three points.

"I'd love to fly back from Ukraine with three points because that would put us in a strong position."

Reflecting on his previous 99 caps, the former West Ham forward said: "I've enjoyed every minute of travelling and playing for my country. What an honour that is.

"The carrot of Brazil, I would love to take part in that and everyone in the squad would."

Ukraine have won their past four qualifiers - scoring 18 times - and while Hodgson's side comfortably overcame Moldova 4-0 at Wembley on Friday, Ukraine hammered San Marino 9-0.

Lampard's late penalty rescued England a 1-1 draw when the teams met at Wembley in September 2012.

"They had a bad start to the group but against us they played with a lot of talent, they have a lot of technical ability and pace on the wings," added Lampard.

"I don't think we were at our best that night but to not lose when you're not at your best is a good thing," added Lampard.

"We'll go there conscious they're a strong team but confident in our own abilities.
"We've got the team to get a result, no doubt."

Coleman defends Bale move

Chris Coleman: Naming Bale on bench was 'mind games'
Chris Coleman: Naming Bale on bench was 'mind games'

Wales boss Chris Coleman admitted that Gareth Bale was never going to feature in the World Cup qualifying defeat to Macedonia.

Coleman raised eyebrows when he named Bale on the bench despite the Real Madrid midfielder not having played any football since July.

The world-record signing watched from the dugout as his team-mates slipped to a 2-1 defeat, and Coleman revealed afterwards that the decision to name Bale as a substitute was an attempt at mind games.

Coleman insisted Bale was not fit enough to play any part, and that his presence was merely a ploy to unsettle opposition number Cedomir Janevski.

When asked if he considered bringing Bale on to try and salvage a draw in the late stages, a tetchy Coleman replied: "What part of he's not fit are you not listening to? Why bring him on if he's not fit?

"You think I would not have used him if he was fit? I don't mind what other people think. What I look at is the opposition. If I'm the opposition manager and Bale is on the bench, maybe it would affect his thinking.

"If he was fit he would have played. I spoke to him, he is not ready. Simple. I haven't conned the supporters to say he might play. If there was a chance he would have played, but there wasn't. We can't take the risk."

Coleman was angered further when questioned about losing his passport earlier this week, which delayed his arrival in Skopje until late on Thursday.

Asked if he was planning to apologise over the incident, Coleman said: "To who? What are you talking about? What you don't know is what we do day to day. All the work had been done. If we'd won you wouldn't make much out of it, but you will because we lost and that's up to you."

On the match, Coleman insisted his team were unfortunate to leave Skopje empty-handed after having the better of much of the encounter.

He said: "The pitch was not great and didn't help the way we play, but we stuck at it and were probably beaten by the pitch at the end of the day. They can feel very lucky to get three points.

"Sometimes when you lose and you deserve to lose then at least you can go back and think you could do better but for large periods of the game we were on top and taking the game to Macedonia and had a lot of opportunities."

Coleman was also disappointed with the performance of Swiss referee Sascha Kever, who he thought was too lenient in his treatment of the home side.

He continued: "Nowadays the rules are you can't pull shirts - I'm 60 yards away from both boxes and I can tell you there were a lot of shirts being pulled.

"The referee is closer than I am, why can't he see it? There were a few incidents we weren't happy with at all, one or two bad challenges that on another day are red cards.

"But we got on with it, we didn't come for one point, we came for three. We took the game to them and we came away with nothing. Unfortunately sometimes in football you don't always get what you deserve."

Mesut Ozil sale impossible to understand, says Joachim Low

Mesut Ozil Germany manager Joachim Low has described Real Madrid's decision to sell Mesut Ozil to Arsenal as "incomprehensible".

The Gunners completed a £42.4m deal for the Germany midfielder, 24, on Monday following Real's signing of Gareth Bale from Tottenham.
But Low has questioned the decision to allow Ozil to leave the Bernabeu.

"For me, it's incomprehensible that Real would sell one of their top scorers," Low said.

"Many Real players like Sami Khedira or Cristiano Ronaldo are sad about the transfer."

Mesut Ozil
World Cup 2010: Mesut Ozil scores against Ghana
Low feels that Ozil will benefit at the Emirates from the determination Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger showed to secure his signing.

The Germany manager, whose team face Austria in a World Cup qualifier on Friday, claims that the Gunners' style of football, as well as Wenger's support, will bring the best out of the former Werder Bremen midfielder.

He added: "Mesut is a sensitive player and he needs the faith from the club and the coach.

"It seems that was no longer 100% there at Real whereas Arsenal and their coach Arsene Wenger pulled out all the stops to get him.

"He has a top coach there and, with Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker, he has two German colleagues. Arsenal are a strong team who play technically high-quality football."

Gareth Bale not guaranteed Real Madrid start - assistant coach

Gareth Bale is not certain to start for Real Madrid despite being the world's most expensive player, says assistant coach Paul Clement.

Wales international Bale, 24, who joined the Spanish side for £85.3m from Tottenham, could make his debut at Villarreal on 14 September.

But Clement told BBC Sport: "There's a lot of competition for places - no-one will be guaranteed anything.

"Coach Carlo Ancelotti has a clear idea how to use him but things can change."

Bale began his career as a left-back at Southampton before going to Spurs where he was first employed in the same position before moving further up the pitch. Gareth Bale
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas then used him in an even more advanced role, giving him freedom to roam along the forward line. He was the club's top scorer last season, with 21 goals in the league.

Former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo, like Bale, has moved further up the field during his career. He found the net 34 times for Real in La Liga last season and scored his 200th goal for the club in May in just his fourth season with the Bernabeu outfit.

And there has been debate whether Bale or Ronaldo will play the furthest forward.

"Carlo is flexible enough to use Gareth and other players in different capacities," Englishman Clement said.

"At Southampton, Bale played at left-back which he also did at Spurs where he became a more left-sided player.

"He recently became more central. He's got that versatility.

"It'll be interesting to see how players fit in together. We'll be trying to find their best position and what's best for the team as quickly as possible.

"Gareth has the goalscoring talent and ability to set up goals for others. We have a lot of exciting players here. [Striker Karim] Benzema is a great talent, while Isco plays in midfield but has chipped in with three goals already."

After finalising the deal on Sunday and having been presented to fans on Monday, Bale has rejoined the Wales squad for their World Cup qualifiers - in Macedonia on 6 September and at home to Serbia four days later.

"Depending on how much or little he plays will depend whether he trains a week on Wednesday or Thursday leading into the first game at Villarreal away [Saturday, 14 September]," added Clement.
Clement himself is still settling in at Real. He arrived in late June having been brought to the club by Ancelotti, with whom he worked at Chelsea and Paris St-Germain, after the Italian was appointed as Jose Mourinho's replacement.

The former PE teacher from the south London borough of Sutton, who progressed up the ranks as coach at Chelsea, said he had been taking regular Spanish lessons to help adjust to his new surroundings and to help with coaching the players.
Gareth Bale
Bale's best Premier League goals

Clement suggested it would benefit Bale to "knuckle down" and learn the language.

"It's more challenging for a coach and manager than a player," he continued. "Communication is everything - you have to instruct and organise.

"It's up to Gareth to learn. A lot of players start having lessons at the club when they arrive. [Croatian] Luka Modric, who played with Gareth at Tottenham, had some lessons initially - he speaks in Spanish and English with the players.

"I'm sure Gareth will do the same. He spoke some lines during the news conference. It's a great life quality if he knuckles down and learns. Our communication with the team as a whole will be in Spanish."

Wayne Rooney posts head injury picture on Facebook

Wayne RooneyWayne Rooney has posted a graphic picture on Facebook showing the head injury that forced him out of England's next two World Cup qualifiers.

The 27-year-old suffered the deep cut in a freak training ground collision with the boot of Manchester United team-mate Phil Jones last week.

Old Trafford boss David Moyes said the striker could be out for three weeks.
England team-mate Theo Walcott has described the photograph as "like something out of a horror film".

Roy Hodgson's side face Moldova at Wembley on Friday and then a difficult trip to Ukraine on Tuesday.

Rooney is one of three players who have withdrawn from the squad due to injury.

Glen Johnson was forced off with an ankle injury during Liverpool's 1-0 win over Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, while United's Jones was also substituted with a similar problem.

Willian joins Chelsea

Willian: Joins Chelsea on a five-year dealChelsea have confirmed the signing of Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala for a reported fee of £32million.
The 25-year-old playmaker, capped twice by Brazil, has been granted a work permit to complete his move from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala after agreeing a five-year contract with the Blues.

"I'm very happy to be here, it's been a dream of mine to come and play here," Willian said on Chelsea's official website.

"Chelsea are one of the best clubs in the world and now I'm going to play for one of the best managers in the world. I'm very happy and looking forward to it."

Willian, who will wear the number 22 shirt, looked set to join Tottenham last week only for Chelsea to hijack the deal and outbid their Barclays Premier League rivals.

He had passed a medical at Spurs before Mourinho swooped to add him to Chelsea's attacking options.
Persistently linked with a move to England, he spent six years at Shakhtar Donetsk where he made his name as a creative midfielder player before joining Anzhi in January.

He began his career in his homeland with Corinthians before moving to Europe with Shakhtar Donetsk in 2007. He made over 100 appearances for the Ukrainian club before moving to Anzhi.

Friday night's Super Cup match against Bayern Munich in Prague has arrived too soon for his Chelsea debut, so he must wait until the Premier League showdown with Everton on September 14 for his bow.

His arrival has fuelled speculation that unsettled Spaniard Juan Mata could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge with Arsenal a possible destination.

Tottenham close in on Lamela

Erik Lamela: On the verge of Tottenham switchTottenham are to set to sign Argentinian forward Erik Lamela from Roma after the Serie A club accepted a bid of 30million euros (£25.8million).

The 21-year-old has scored 19 league goals in two seasons with the Italian capital club and, should his move to White Hart Lane go through, he will help fill the gap left by Gareth Bale should he complete a world-record £86m move to Real Madrid.

A statement published on Roma's official website read: "Roma announce they have signed a contract with Tottenham for the outright sale of the playing rights of Erik Lamela, in exchange for 30million euros.

"The agreement also includes the obligation to pay 5million euros in bonuses related to the achievements of the player and the English club."

Lamela, who has been capped three times for Argentina, arrived at the Stadio Olimpico from River Plate in August 2011 and made 29 appearances, scoring four goals, in his first year in Italy.

A run of seven goals in six games at the start of the 2012-13 season saw him become an essential part of Roma's forward line, even though the campaign ended with a disappointing sixth-place finish and defeat to city rivals Lazio in the Coppa Italia final.

With Wales winger Bale absent from training as a dispute over a move to Real Madrid rumbles on, and with Spurs missing out on Willian following the Brazilian playmaker's decision to join Chelsea instead, the pacey Lamela offers a viable and talented alternative to both players.

The continued spending in north London indicates Bale's £86m move to the Spanish capital is all but ratified as Lamela joins Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Nacer Chadli and Etienne Capoue in Andre Villas-Boas' new-look squad.

Lamela's place behind Francesco Totti in the Giallorossi team, meanwhile, will be filled by Serbian forward Adem Ljajic, who has today completed an 11million euro move from Fiorentina.

Arsenal: Arsene Wenger only interested in 'special' players

Arsene Wenger Manager Arsene Wenger insists he will only bring "special" players to Arsenal, with a week remaining until the summer transfer window closes.

Striker Yaya Sanogo, a free transfer, is the Gunners' only signing so far.

Arsenal are keen to sign Real Madrid's Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria, and Newcastle's Yohan Cabaye.

Referencing his current squad following Saturday's 3-1 win at Fulham, he said: "They are special and if I want to add something it has to be special."

In recent months, the north London club have failed with a move for striker Luis Suarez, seen their £10m offer for midfielder Cabaye rejected and and have been linked with moves for strikers Wayne Rooney of Manchester United and Gonzalo Higuain, who eventually moved from Real Madrid to Napoli.

Mathieu Flamini is believed to be in talks about returning to the club on a free transfer - the midfielder, who has been training at the club this summer, previously left the Gunners to join AC Milan in 2008.

They are also understood to be interested in bringing in a goalkeeper and a defender before the transfer window shuts at 23:00 BST on Monday, 2 September.
Arsenal have been criticised by Newcastle manager Alan Pardew about their pursuit of Cabaye, but Wenger refused to comment on speculation about his supposed targets.

"I will not give you any names, because it would be unfair for the players who play at another club," he said. "It could, as well, create some wrong hopes.

"You could see that many of the disputes you have all over the country is because the coaches or the managers speak about the players.

"In our job, just be discreet and try to make things happen. That's what we try to do."

The Frenchman was repeatedly urged to spend by the club's fans during the 3-1 home loss to Aston Villa, on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Gareth Bale: Spurs 'consider rival bid to Real Madrid offer'

Gareth Bale Tottenham have received a separate offer in addition to Real Madrid's world record £86m bid for Gareth Bale, say sources at the north London club.

The Spanish giants remain in pole position to sign the 24-year-old Welshman, but Spurs say no agreement has been reached with Real.

The second bidder's identity is not known but Manchester United have been linked with the forward this summer.

Meanwhile, Spurs have spoken to Chelsea about buying a player to replace Bale.

They were close to signing Brazilian winger Willian as a replacement last week before a late bid from the Blues beat them to his signature.

As it stands, Chelsea are refusing to sell do business, frustrating Spurs.

After his side's 1-0 win over Swansea on Sunday, Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas said he expects Bale, who has been in Madrid this week, to be back at training on Tuesday if a deal has not been agreed with Real.

Real play away to Granada on Monday, having won their opening La Liga fixture 2-1 at home to Real Betis.
Their next home game will be on Sunday - a day before the transfer window closes on 2 September - against Athletic Bilbao.

Bale, who joined Spurs in a £10m deal from Southampton in 2007, was named player of the year by both the Professional Footballers' Association and Football Writers last season after scoring 26 goals for the White Hart Lane side.

Madrid have already spent in excess of £50m this summer, bringing in Spanish midfielders Asier Illarramendi from Real Sociedad and Malaga's Isco for £34m and £23m respectively.

Willian: Chelsea confirm deal for Brazil midfielder

Chelsea have confirmed a deal  has been agreed to sign attacking midfielder Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala, subject to a work permit hearing on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Brazilian was close to joining Tottenham after having a medical last Wednesday.

But it is understood the Blues made their move at around 18:00 BST on Thursday, with a fee and personal terms agreed within 24 hours.

Chelsea are believed to have agreed to pay £30m to the Russian club.

The transfer was made possible after Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, whose fellow Russian oligarch Suleyman Kerimov owns Anzhi, intervened.

Willian was expected to join Tottenham, but when the Blues stepped in he felt the chance to play Champions League football was too good to reject.

Sources close to the player said Chelsea have made enquiries or offers for his services in every transfer window since 2011.

Willian will become the Stamford Bridge club's third major summer acquisition following the arrivals of Germany forward Andre Schurrle and Netherlands midfielder Marco van Ginkel.

On Friday Blues manager Jose Mourinho had indicated that Willian would choose Chelsea over Tottenham.
Willian joined Anzhi in January for a reported £30m after five-and-a-half seasons with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, but he became available as the Russian club attempt to cut costs after a change in strategy by their owner.

Tottenham had expected to break their transfer record and make Willian their fifth major summer signing.
Willian's arrival at Stamford Bridge further strengthens a squad full of attack-minded midfielders including Eden Hazard, Oscar, Kevin De Bruyne, Schurrle and Juan Mata, who Mourinho insists will not be leaving.
